San Diego Trip - Part 2

It was too much to write all at once!

On Friday, Janet worked a half day at work. So we got up and decided to go check out a running store, Roadrunner Sports, that we shop at online for all our shoes. They have some pretty good prices, plus no shipping or tax. We figured we go see the store, maybe spend about an hour there. Well, we ended up staying for over 2 hours! We both got our feet & run analyzed to see if we were wearing the right shoes. Turns out we are, but it was cool to see your stride in slow motion on a tv. We also picked up a few things...clothes, a "stick" (use to massage), socks, and some arm sleeves for Tony. After that we went to Mission Bay to run before Janet got off work. After the run, we went back to the hotel and showered really quick and met up with Janet. We went to Hodad's in Ocean Beach for lunch. We walked there from her apartment. The food there was awesome! I had a grilled cheese, Tony & Janet had burgers, onion rings & fries, and we all split a chocolate milkshake! Yum! Good thing we don't live there because I think we would go all the time! After lunch, we took a walk down the beach part, out on the pier, and along the cliffs back to Janet's apartment. After that Janet drove us around to some different areas...the museums, Old Town San Diego, etc. We then met up with David for a little bit before going to dinner with them and a friend of David's. It ended up being a kind of late night because it was kind of tough finding a place to eat that wasn't super crowded.

Saturday we got up and went for another run. This time around our hotel. There were some paths that worked well for a shorter run. Janet and David came over to our hotel and then we went out to Coronado Island to see David's base and eat at Clayton's (the burrito place). We enjoyed getting to go "behind the scenes" that not many people get to experience seeing at the base. We got tons of stories and demos from David as we were walking around. Clayton's for lunch was also delicious! Janet and David eat there quite a bit, and we can see why. Tony got a burrito and I got a chicken quesadilla. All the meat and tortillas you could tell were home-made from scratch. We then walked around Coronado some more, went out to the beach, and saw the Hotel del Coronado. Since it was Saturday, the boys wanted to watch some football. So we went back to David's, Janet and I went to a few shops, and just hung out for a bit. The four of us decided to go to a nice dinner since it was our last night. Janet and David picked George's in La Jolla. We sat in the bar and watched the rest of the OU game, and then got to eat on the rooftop for dinner. We all loved out food and thought the atmosphere was really neat. We also got to drive to this small beach area where tons of seals were sleeping/playing. It was kind of dark, but you could still see them because they were not too far away.

Sunday was our last day. We had an afternoon flight, so we were still able to do a little bit with Janet and David. They came to our hotel while we finished packing, we grabbed some coffee from Janet's drive thru pirate ship place and went to Mission Beach because they have a cool boardwalk type area with a little amusement park and places to walk along the beach. We even got some pictures taken in the photo booth! Then we went to get lunch at Point Loma Seafood. Janet and David love these squid sandwhiches. I decided I would try it too, but I didn't love it as much as they did. Sorry Jan! It was still a really nice day and we were able to sit outside and enjoy it. The weather had been kind of off and on throughout the trip. Kind of cloudy and rainy/misty, but Sunday it was finally nice and sunny the whole time. Sadly, we had to head to the airport after lunch for our flights back home to Tulsa. We can't wait to see Janet again for Thanksgiving and David at Christmas too. We could tell Janet really likes it out there, so hopefully we'll have a reason to go out there again soon!

San Diego Trip - Part 1 & Pictures

I have a fall break at school right after the first 9 weeks is over where I get a Thursday and Friday off of school. It's a nice, much needed break! Since Janet just moved to San Diego about a month ago, we decided to book a trip over Fall Break to go visit her and finally get to spend some time with her boyfriend, David. We knew David and had met him before but had never really been around him for more than a few minutes at a time. We left on Wednesday night after school & work, flew to Denver, and then on to San Diego. With the time change, we got there around 8pm. Janet and David picked us up at the airport and we went to have some dinner in downtown San Diego. There's a cool area called the Gaslamp District with a lot of restaurants and bars where we went to a really good pizza place...Sloppy Joey's, I think. They had real, home-made tasting sauce that we really liked! We then went to check into our hotel for the night, The Pearl. It was a trendy kind of hotel with modern furniture and cool bar area. They were having "movie night" when we got there where they projecting a movie on a big screen out by the pool. We then went to see Janet's apartment in Ocean Beach. After that we were pretty tired from getting up for work and the 2 hour time difference, so we just went back to the hotel and went to bed.

On Thursday, Janet had to work a full day, so we woke up pretty early because of the time difference and went for a run out on the cliffs in Ocean Beach, our where Janet lives. She runs out there a lot. It reminded us of our marathon just because it was running right along the ocean. The weather was cool, but sunny, so we warmed up pretty quickly. Then we went back to the hotel, showered, and got ready to go to breakfast. We picked a place called Hash House A-Go-Go because it was on Diners Drive In's & Dives! We had to wait for about 20 minutes which apparently is not bad. On the weekends I guess people wait for hours! We didn't really know what to expect. It was kind of in an older looking house, so we were thinking it would be kind of diner like with your basic, good home-made breakfast. Little did we know, it was pretty upscale! We sat at the bar which we really liked because we got to watch the waitress make all the cool drinks. Tony got an egg scramble with mashed potatoes! and a biscuit. I got a pancake with blackberries and granola with a side of eggs and bacon. The pancake was so huge!! It was literally bigger than my head and the plates were enormous! We left feeling stuffed and ready to go walk it off at the zoo. We spent about 3 hours at the zoo. Seeing all the animals. They really have things spread out and there is a lot of just areas with trees inbetween the exhibits. Tony had been looking foward to seeing the polar bears the most! They have a tank where you can see the polar bears swimming around underwater which was really cool. We got to lucky because when we walked up the big polar bear was in the water trying to get at something that was in the corner of the tank. He was right up against the glass for a long time. We fought our way to go see him and take some pictures. It was so neat to be that close with only a pieces of glass separating us from him! We also took the Sky Tram over the zoo. It was kind of scary because it was pretty high up, but it saved us from walking from one end of the park to the other! We were worn out after walking all around that zoo! We didn't realize how big and spread out it would be.

We had a second hotel to check into for the rest of the weekend, the Courtyard Marriott at Liberty Station. It's a newer, traditional hotel pretty close to Janet's area. We wanted to check it out too for my parents when they go to visit. We relaxed and napped a little bit before Janet got home from work. We met up with Janet and David, saw David's place, and then went to a bar called the Tipsy Crow with them and Janet's roommated and one of David's roommates. Tony wanted to check this bar out because they price their beer in a stock market style. The price changes based on how many of the kind of beer they have sold. So the more people buy, the higher the price goes. They have TV's all around showing the prices and the low and high for the day. It was fun to get to hang out with Janet's roommate and get to know her too. After going there, we went to get some dinner at the Blue Parrot. It's in Ocean Beach, down the street from Janet's, and I guess they go there a lot. They had $3 any drinks and $2 tacos...right up our alley! So we all had a great meal there. It was a really low key type of place with some good Mexican. It was pretty late by the time we were done, and we were ready to get to bed.

Friday and the weekend to come!

Woolaroc Race

For the 2nd year in a row Tony and I ran the Woolaroc 8k north of Tulsa in Bartlesville (where Tony grew up). We ran the race last year and really enjoyed it. It's a smaller, more local race. They do have chip timing, water stations, food, tshirts, and all that other important race stuff. The course is hilly though. One good long hill towards the beginning, some slow climbs in the middle, and a good long hill in the end. It's just around the entrance & exit road to the museum and all that. Last year it was really cold, low 40s even once we started. This year it was warmer, 50s, and sunny. It was still really comfortable even until the end of the race. We obviously didn't run together at all this time. Tony took off and I took the slow and steady approach. It was different to run a race and not feel like you're going all out, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable for me. I was really just happy to be able to be out there doing it.

Here are our results:
Tony: 33:09, about 6:34 per mile, 13th overall and 2nd in his age group. About a minute faster than last year.
Beth: 43:15, about 8:39 per mile, 22nd for women and 4th in my age group. This was about 7 min slower for me than last year.

Another kind of thing is that our race numbers were 317 & 318...3/18 is our due date! So we thought that was kind of cool.
